Earthwork & Excavation

Clearing, cutting, embankment, sub-grade and compaction. Getting a road formation to the level and the density the drawing calls for.

  • Clearing and grubbing
  • Cut and embankment
  • Sub-grade to design density
  • Rollers and graders owned

Earthwork is measured in cubic metres and judged in millimetres.

A formation that is 40mm proud does not look wrong to anybody standing on it, and it will still cost a contractor a bituminous layer's worth of material to correct. Density that is a few points shy passes visual inspection and fails a field density test three weeks later, after the layer above it is already down.

We run excavators, rollers and graders on cut, embankment, sub-grade and compaction, working to the drawing and to whatever the consultant on site is testing against.

What you get

What we bring to the site

01

Clearing and grubbing

Vegetation, roots, topsoil and whatever else is in the corridor, stripped and stockpiled or disposed of as the contract requires.

02

Cut and embankment

Roadway excavation and embankment built in layers to design cross-section and grade, not tipped and hoped over.

03

Sub-grade and compaction

Levelling, moisture conditioning and rolling to the density the specification calls for, with rollers and graders we own rather than hire by the day.

04

Haul roads

The internal roads a quarry lives on. A properly built haul road pays for itself in tipper tyres and cycle times inside a month, which is a thing every contractor knows and few sites do.

Straight answers

Earthwork questions

01Do you work under the client's consultant?

Yes. Levels, layer thickness and density are checked by whoever the contract nominates, and our work is set out to be tested rather than to look finished.

02Can you do earthwork without the mining and crushing?

Yes, though most of our earthwork sits alongside a plant on the same project. Where it is a standalone package, it is priced as one.
